Authentic Indigenous Art
Artist: Stephanie White
Cultural Background: Mi’kmaq, Qalipu Band, Newfoundland and Labrador

In Indigenous cultures, the Spirit Bear holds a deep meaning as a sacred symbol representing strength, courage, and healing, and is often associated with reconciliation and childhood purity. According to legend, a creator god turned some black bears white to remind people of a time of glaciers and to be thankful for the current lush lands. The Spirit Bear is particularly significant to the Kitasoo/Xaixais First Nation, who consider it a sacred animal with supernatural powers.

Symbolism:

Strength and authority: The bear symbolizes strength, courage, and authority in many First Nations traditions.
Healing and medicine: Bears are seen as healers and protectors, and their image is connected to healing and medicine.
Childhood purity: Some traditions view the Spirit Bear as a symbol of childhood purity and keepers of dreams and memory.
Reconciliation: The Spirit Bear has become a modern symbol of reconciliation and Jordan’s Principle, which ensures First Nations children have equitable access to services.

Cultural significance:

A sacred animal: The Spirit Bear is a sacred symbol for many, especially to the Kitasoo/Xaixais First Nation.
A sacred guardian: The Spirit Bear is also seen as a guardian of the Great Bear Rainforest.
Legends: Origin stories describe how the Spirit Bear was created to remind people of past times and the importance of being thankful for their land.
Protection: Indigenous peoples have worked to protect the Spirit Bear, historically keeping its existence a secret to prevent it from being hunted by fur traders.
