Cultural Background: Ojibway

In Indigenous culture, the phrase “Prayers for Turtle Island” is an expression of deep respect and spiritual connection to Mother Earth (North America), the land itself, and a call for its well-being and the harmonious existence of all life upon it

The meaning is rooted in several interconnected concepts:

Turtle Island as Mother Earth: “Turtle Island” is the name many Algonquian- and Iroquoian-speaking peoples (and other Indigenous nations) use to refer to the continent of North America. The term is a constant reminder that the land is a sacred, living entity that provides life and sustenance, much like a mother.
Creation Stories and Sacred Responsibility: The name stems from various Indigenous oral histories, where the world was formed on the back of a giant turtle after a great flood. This foundational story emphasizes themes of creation, resilience, cooperation, and the interconnectedness of all living things. “Prayers” are therefore offered as part of the sacred responsibility to be caretakers and stewards of the land and its ecosystems.
Symbolism of the Turtle: The turtle itself is a powerful symbol representing longevity, protection, patience, wisdom, and truth. Its shell often serves as a natural calendar, with 13 large scutes representing the 13 lunar cycles in a year and 28 smaller scutes representing the days in each cycle, further connecting the creature to the rhythms of the earth and cosmos.
A Worldview and Way of Life: The concept of Turtle Island and the associated prayers invite a way of life that embraces sustainability, respect for the environment, and walking gently on the Earth. They are expressions of gratitude and a call to live in harmony with nature and all other human beings.

Ultimately, “Prayers for Turtle Island” is an affirmation of Indigenous identity and a spiritual commitment to protecting the sacredness of the Earth for current and future generations.
