Authentic Indigenous Art
Artist: Jessica Somers
Cultural Background: Odanak Abenaki, Ontario

In Indigenous cultures, the January Moon (Wolf Moon) symbolizes the deep winter, resilience, and the importance of community and communication. It is named for the howling wolves heard during this time, though it’s now understood they howl to communicate and define territory, not just from hunger. Other names for this moon reflect the harsh conditions, such as the Cold Moon (Cree) or Severe Moon (Dakota), while some, like the Ojibwe’s Spirit Moon, emphasize reflection and connection to creation during the quietest part of winter.

Symbolic meaning:

Resilience and scarcity: The howling wolves were seen as a reminder of the need for resilience and preparation during a time of scarcity.
Community and communication: The name also highlights the importance of social bonds, as wolves howl to locate their pack members and reinforce social ties.
Connection and reflection: Some cultures, like the Ojibwe with their “Spirit Moon” name, use this time for quiet reflection, focusing on one’s connection to the land and all of creation.
Harshness of winter: Other names, such as the Cree’s “Cold Moon” or “Frost Exploding Moon” and the Dakota’s “Hard Moon,” directly reference the extreme cold and icy conditions of January.
