“Full Moon Ceremony”

18 oz. Signature Mug

Designed by Artist Jackie Traverse

Authentic Indigenous Art
Artist: Jackie Traverse
Cultural Background: Anishinabe, Lake St. Martin First Nation

A Full Moon Ceremony in Indigenous culture is a sacred gathering, often for women and womb-bearing people, to honor the relationship with “Grandmother Moon”. It is a time for community, reflection, gratitude, and healing, acknowledging the connection between the moon’s 28-day cycle and the female body. Practices can include sharing stories, drumming, singing, offering tobacco and water to the earth, and seeking guidance.

Meaning and purpose:

Connection to nature: Ceremonies honor the relationship with the moon and all of creation, acknowledging a reciprocal relationship with the earth and water.
Healing and renewal: They are a time for personal and collective healing, replenishment of energy, and cleansing of negativities.
Empowerment and support: Women gather in a circle of support to share stories, gain guidance from elders, and empower each other.
Gratitude and reciprocity: Ceremonies are a way to express gratitude for the harvest and the bounty of the land, and to give back to the earth.
Carrying on traditions: They serve to pass down traditional knowledge and strengthen cultural identity.

Common elements:

Gathering: Communities often gather in a circle, sometimes in a sweat lodge or under the open sky, with the oldest to the youngest present.
Rituals: Practices often include placing tobacco in a fire, drumming, singing, and dancing.
Water: A special emphasis is often placed on water. Participants may bring their own water, which is then combined, blessed by Grandmother Moon, and used as “medicine” for the month ahead.
Offerings: Other offerings can include food and yellow cloth, shared with the fire or Grandmothers.
Timing: Ceremonies can be held on the night of the full moon or within a couple of days before or after.
