Dawn Oman, is a Métis artist born in Yellowknife in the Northwest Territories. She is a direct descendant of Chief Snuff, chief of the Yellow Knives tribe and one of the signatories of Treaty 8 with the Government of Canada in 1899 – 1900. She began to seriously work on developing her art during her teenage years, after moving to Vancouver. In 1998, she returned to Yellowknife and opened her own gallery there in 1999. She still continues to paint and receives visitors and collectors from across Canada and the world.
Dawn is the recipient of both People’s Choice and Artist’s Choice Awards at the Great Northern Arts Festival in Inuvik, Her works have been chosen by the Royal Canadian Mint to represent the Territories on 50-cent silver collector coins in the Festivals of Canada series.
